Water Wisdom - Tips

  • When you give plants more water than they need, they grow more than they should, and you have to do more pruning and mowing.
  • While fertilizers promote plant growth, they also increase water consumption. Apply the minimum amount of fertilizer needed.
  • With sprinklers, water in the early morning—about one to three hours before sunrise. That way more water gets to the roots instead of evaporating due to the sun and wind.
  • Your landscape plants can share water. If you have high plant density in your landscape (canopy edges are 2 feet apart or less) you may be able to apply less water per plant.
  • Because of different watering needs, it is best to place trees and shrubs on separate valves.
  • Pull weeds every week so they don’t steal water from your plants.
  • As your landscape plants grow, water needs will change.
  • Mark your calendar to reevaluate your landscape each year to determine if water placement should be changed and if more water should be applied.
  • You can reduce your landscape watering 30 to 50 percent by adjusting your irrigation each season.
  • Rainwater is very beneficial for your plants, and it’s free. You can harvest rain by contouring your yard with small berms, channels, or swales to direct water runoff to your plants.
  • Place a rain gauge in your yard. If you receive at least 1/2 inch of rain you can skip your next irrigation cycle.
  • Potted plants have restricted root systems and less soil compared to plants established in the ground. They will typically need more frequent watering.
  • Use the ‘off’ or ‘rain’ setting on your controller to stop the watering cycle without disturbing your programs.
  • Water dry spots by hand instead of running the entire sprinkler system.
  • Graywater (used household water from clothes washers, bathtubs, bathroom sinks, and showers) can be used to water your landscape, saving money and our valuable water. However, you must follow state, county, and city guidelines. For more information, contact your local water provider. Many are online!

Local Landscape Contractor wins industry awards for Xeriscape/Water Management and Design

June 20, 2011, Gilroy, CA:  Landscape Innovation, Inc., and owners Greg Bozzo & Joe Carrera, carried away three awards from the Central Coast Chapter, California Landscape Contractors Association, at the awards dinner on June 17, 2011.

As a landscape contractor specializing in landscape water management, Landscape Innovation Inc. took both first place and second place achievement awards in the category of Xeriscape/Water Management. The first place award is for the landscape water management project at Village Green in Gilroy, California. During year one of the first phase of the Village Green project, the Village Green Homeowners Association saved 3,882,000 gallons of water. Their annual irrigation water bill went down by over $25,000, and they realized a first year savings over investment of $8,100. “Landscape Innovation Inc. helped us save millions of gallons of water and thousands of dollars in the first year alone!” said Terry Aulman, President of the Village Green HOA. Since this first landscape water management project, Village Green has implemented two additional phases, saving even more gallons of precious water, as well as dollars, all with limited investment required.

The Second Place Achievement award in the Xeriscape category is for the LaCrosse Village Apartment complex in Morgan Hill, California. This project included replacing 9,000 square feet of turf with low-water-use creeping Red Fescue, replacing outdated overhead irrigation with high efficiency sub-surface irrigation, and replacing outdated irrigation controllers with the latest weather-sensitive clocks. Again the savings were significant in the two years since inception: Landscape Innovation Inc. cut irrigation water usage in 2009 by 1,189,320 gallons, and saved the project $4,670, a 25% savings over the past two years. In 2010 LI cut water usage by 1,962,004 gallons, and saved $4,987, showing a 40% savings. The property owners are so pleased with this project’s results that they have done a similar improvement at another of their residential apartment complexes in Morgan Hill.

The Second Place Achievement award in the Design Build category is for a residential property in Gilroy, California. The project included designing and building a complete landscape treatment for the 3,500 square foot addition to the property. That included all plants, lights, rocks, masonry, and irrigation scopes. Landscape Innovation Inc. also designed and installed the new driveway for the entire property, as well as the fence/gate placement, lighting, irrigation upgrade, and plant changes for the entire project. One unique application was raising the current driveway up four feet to its current grade. The other neat application is the use of all L.E.D. lights, all switched on the inside of the house.

Owners Greg Bozzo and Joe Carrera are both delighted to have received these awards, and particularly to be recognized for their water conservation work. “It’s very gratifying that CLCA and the Central Coast Chapter recognize that saving water is a very important part of the overall landscape package,” said Joe.

Landscape Innovation Inc. is located in Gilroy, and has projects in Santa Clara, San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
